Heat is Michael Mann's crime epic starring Al Pacino as LAPD detective Vincent Hanna and Robert De Niro as professional thief Neil McCauley — two sides of the same coin on a collision course in Los Angeles. The film's 40-minute bank robbery sequence is one of the greatest action sequences in cinema, and its coffee shop scene between Pacino and De Niro marked the first time the two legends appeared on screen together.
Heat streams on Max with any subscription plan. It's also available to rent or buy on Prime Video.
Michael Mann directed Heat 2 as a novel (2022) but as of 2025, no film sequel has been officially greenlit, though Mann has expressed interest.
Heat is inspired by a real Los Angeles detective named Chuck Adamson and his pursuit of a criminal named Neil McCauley in the 1960s. Mann dramatized their relationship significantly.
Heat runs 170 minutes in its theatrical cut. A Director's Definitive Edition (2022) runs 179 minutes and is available on some platforms.
Yes — the coffee shop scene where Pacino and De Niro meet face to face was the first time the two actors ever shared the screen in the same shot. Prior Godfather II scenes were filmed separately.
